Is the Cost of Hearing Aids Too High?

Is the cost of better hearing health breaking your wallet?

We often compare wearing hearing aids to wearing glasses, since they both enhance our ability to function in our respective communities and interact more easily with others. But one can’t deny that the cost of a pair of hearing aids isn’t comparable to the cost of a pair of glasses.

Hearing aids vs. glasses

Having said that, both of these assistive devices are not comparable in regards their technology either.

In our attempts to lower the negative impact of hearing loss, the technology of hearing aids has evolved to work within our world of digital devices like smartphones, laptops and tablets. Modern hearing aids are now digital marvels that come in waterproof and invisible styles.

Glasses, on the other hand, haven’t made the same leaps and bounds.

“Why are hearing aids so extremely costly? Why?”

We received a customer service enquiry asking this very question. One of Hearing Solution’s veteran Client Care Coordinators from our Bayview Village location in Toronto provided the following answer…

Hello,

I understand you’re asking about the cost of hearing aids. You’re correct in that they can be quite expensive but I’d be happy to explain the reason why.

There are 2 types of costs associated with a hearing aid purchase – the cost for the hearing aid itself and the fees to the clinic that is providing it to you.

Level of technology reflected in the price

The cost for the hearing aid itself is set by the manufacturer and it’s the amount billed to the clinic. The manufacturer’s price for a hearing aid can range from approximately $600-$3000. The range of cost reflects the level of technology and all the research and development that went into creating that technology.

Hearing aids are complex medical devices and have become quite advanced in their ability to multitask, process sounds, reduce noise and enhance speech. Many are even Bluetooth compatible and can stream audio from phones, televisions and computers directly through the hearing aids.

All of these features that have improved over the years (consider hearing aids 20 years ago compared to hearing aids today) are directly due to the extensive research and development by the hearing aid manufacturers. They’re always aiming to improve the technology that exists so hearing aid users can always hear their best.

Benefits include your prescription, counselling and hearing aid maintenance

The other portion of the cost of hearing aids would be from the clinic providing them. These fees, including dispensing fees and clinic service/office visit fees, are for:

  • The professional advice, care and support provided to a hearing aid user
  • Hearing tests
  • Consultations
  • Prescriptions
  • Dispensing of hearing aids
  • Counselling
  • Maintenance

At Hearing Solutions, we pride ourselves on being among the very best with regards to the care, service and support we provide our patients.

I hope this explanation helps you to better understand the costs associated with a hearing aid purchase.
